Who is USPKenya?

Users and Survivors of Psychiatry in Kenya (USPKenya) is a non-governmental organization that was established and registered in Kenya in the year 2007. It is a membership organization whose major objective is to promote and advocate for the rights of persons with psychosocial disabilities/users and survivors of psychiatry in Kenya.

Who is a person with disability?

Persons with disabilities include those who have long term physical, mental, intellectual or sensory impairments which in interaction with various barriers will hinder their full and effective participation in the society on an equal basis with others (Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD).

What is a psychosocial disability?

This is a term that refers to persons who may define themselves in various ways: as users or consumers of mental health services; survivors of psychiatry or people experiencing mental health problems, issues or crises. The term psychosocial disability is meant to express the following:
• A social rather than medical model of conditions and experiences labeled as mental illness;
• A recognition that both internal and external factors in a person’s life situation can affect a person’s need for support or accommodation beyond the ordinary.

What benefits do I access when I register as a person with disability?

1. Tax exemption
If in employment you will be exempted from paying P.A.Y.E (Pay As You Earn) up to an amount of Ksh. 150,000 per month by Kenya Revenue Authority.
2. Procurement
This is applicable to Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) who have registered businesses/companies in line with the 30% procurement law provisions benefiting youths, women and PWDs.
3. Education grants
This program aims to improve persons with disabilities’ enrolment, retention and completion of education cycle for eventual engagement in decent and gainful employment.
4. Job placement
The Job Placement Department deals with analyzing market information trends in order to disseminate market intelligence to PWDs.
5. Legal Services
Provision of professional legal services to Persons with Disabilities.
6. Economic Empowerment
The Fund provides grants to Community and Self Help Groups for Economic Empowerment or Revolving Fund Schemes.
7. Social protection program
This program is targeted at persons with severe disabilities

How do I register as a person with disability?

Requirements
• A colored passport sized photo;
• A copy of a medical report from
government gazetted hospitals
(assessment is carried out in designated
district hospital throughout the country );
• Dully filled individual registration form
from the National Council for Persons
with Disabilities (NCPWD).
• Once these documents are submitted to
NCPWD a card is issued within a period
of less than three months.

What is the mandate of USPKenya?

To ensure the full and effective participation of persons with psychosocial disabilities in all spheres of life by advocating for their rights within a human rights framework. USPKenya does not offer any medical services.

Where does USPKenya operate?

Nairobi, Nakuru, Nyeri and Kiambu Counties
